For Mudflap · Software Engineer, Ruby on Rails

Joel Gaff, Jr.

Rails developer, looking for a full-time full stack or backend role. Open to remote or Portland, Oregon.

Mudflap builds fintech for small trucking businesses on a Ruby on Rails back end. I build and run Rails apps end to end, and my most recent one is bookkeeping software for small businesses.

Why I'm a fit for Mudflap's Software Engineer, Ruby on Rails

Here's what the posting asks for, and what I've actually done.

Build and scale production-grade web applications and APIs using Ruby on Rails
Over four-plus years I've designed, built, and run nearly a dozen production Rails apps, including Rails Guild, Omarchy Guild, Podium Stats, and Cucamonga.
Own features end to end, from technical design to deployment and monitoring
I work solo, so I own everything: the data model, every migration, the DNS records, and the Kamal deploys. I built Grateful Deploy to deploy, roll back, read logs, and watch each app's version, health, and memory.
Clean, well-tested, maintainable code with attention to edge cases
Partita Doppia and Grateful Deploy ship with Minitest suites (model, integration, and system tests) and a pre-push hook. In Partita Doppia a document can only be edited, voided, or deleted while nothing depends on it, and every bank match is undoable.
Solid understanding of SQL databases
My apps run on SQL (SQLite). Partita Doppia models a double-entry ledger and produces a profit and loss, balance sheet, trial balance, general ledger, and receivables and payables aging.
Fintech for small businesses
Partita Doppia is double-entry books for small businesses, with bank reconciliation against a nightly SimpleFIN feed and an import from Xero over its API.
Be Customer Obsessed, Be Curious
Most of my projects start as something I use every day, and Podium Stats runs the Traverse City Track Club's Grand Prix series. I'm self-taught and I co-host The Pingback Podcast about Rails.
Remote, aligned with Pacific Time
I'm in Portland, Oregon, on Pacific Time.

To be upfront: Mudflap's web front end is Vue.js; mine are Hotwire, so Vue would be new for me.

About

I'm a self-taught Ruby on Rails developer in Portland, Oregon. Over the past four-plus years I've designed, built, and run nearly a dozen production Rails apps, solo. I handle every migration, the DNS records, and the deploys.

I borrow a lot from 37signals: a single Rails monolith, Hotwire on the front end, and almost always SQLite. I deploy with Kamal, including to my own home server through a Cloudflare tunnel.

I'm looking for a full-time full stack or backend role, open to remote or Portland, Oregon.

I'll be at SF Ruby, Nov 10-11, 2026. If you're there too, come say hi.
